Post subject:  Large WOUND in Water Oak - See Photos

The water oak in my front yard in Houston may be 50-60 years old. The single trunk of the oak formed two separate trunks about five feet off the ground and grew up from there. The tree is now about 60 feet tall. At some point, a limb began to grow from the crotch where the single trunk turned in to two separate trunks. The 6-8 inch limb was then cut off from within the crotch area. I suspect this occurred about 2 years ago when the property was sold. Upon inspection a few months ago, I found rot in the remains of the removed limb, and in part of one of the trunks on the left as you can see. An arborist told me that trees can heal themselves with time and will actually grow new material completely around the wound encasing it so it is contained. Nevertheless it looks very nasty to me and it is located in a very critical and weakened area. I have got to do whatever it takes to save and preserve this tree !!! Any thoughts or ideas...? Please Help. thank you.
