Post subject:  Catalpa Tree Stump Question

Hello everyone,

I have a catapla tree that was very recently accidentally cut down. I know little about trees and wanted to see if anyone could provide guidance on the following:

1) Will a new tree grow from the stump?
2) If so, how long does it take to start?
3) If so, is there any kind of fertilizer, etc. that I can use to speed up the growth, or that will help provide a good start?
4) Am I better to remove the stump and start over?
5) If removing the stump is best, what would you recommend?

I'm glad to have found this forum, and plan to let a co-worker who I usually get lots of gardening advice from know about it.

Thanks a million for any help,
Jeff

What city?

There's some disagreement on the issue, but many people consider Catalpa to be a trash tree, and I fall within that group. It has a short life, and it's rather unattractive, especially in the summer.

I'd remove the stump and plant a real tree. If you have the space, and depending on your location, I'd go with a Burr Oak or Chinquapin Oak. If it's a little constrained, a Ginkgo or Shantung Maple would be nice.
