Post subject:  Germinating gingko seeds?

I found some newly dropped gingko seeds at a public garden yesterday. There were so many and they were likely going to be swept off the concrete path they were on so I felt like it was o.k. to pick up about 10 off the ground. Some still have their stinky fruit around them. I want to germinate them and plant maybe two in the backyard once they get a couple feet tall. I understand they need to rest for the winter. How do I do all this successfully? I don't want them to sprout prematurely due to our up and down temperatures. Should I leave them in some leaf litter? Should I store them in peat in the fridge for the winter? Should I pot them and put them outside for the winter? And once they sprout, then what? I'm a seasoned veggie gardener but am not so good with baby trees, lol.
