a year ago, I had a 30 gallon Live Oak tree planted on the SW side of my house. I'm on a 1.5 acre lot and rarely go to that side of the house, but noticed yesterday the tree was staked. Imagine my surprise!

Now I see the truck has many vertical cracks. One is deep and open like I've seen on older trees that are dying or getting ready to fall down.

When I called the landscaper, he said he staked it because it 'blew over in high winds last year'. I didn't know that. He also told me the cracks are there from 'growing too fast'. Sounds like bunk to me. But what do I know?

Any comments would be very much appreciated

Frankie

Sounds like that landscaper should have told you about this tree previously blowing over and given you a price break or a replacement guarantee. Other than that, I don't think trees can "grow too fast" but they can be stressed, can be too deep in the ground, or they can have roots still in a ball shape (was this in a pot?) or any number of planting mistakes that compromise the tree health.

What do you know about how the tree was planted? Do you know about the "too deep in the ground" problem that comes from planting the root ball so deep that the root flare is under dirt instead of exposed?

I am sorry to say I know little of how the tree was planted a year ago. And I completely agree the landscaper should have told me about it blowing over.

Nonetheless, the tree has been replaced and the new one looks normal! And, to this naked eye, it appears to have been planted correctly.

thank you.
