The City leaned out around a dry creek bed the other day. I live in the suburbs just north of Dallas. I saw a nice looking tree 40 feet tall or so, and had these yellow fruits all around on the floor. Some were turning black very quickly. The "fruit" has a huge nut or pit in it, with just a thin layer of flesh between it and the skin. The nut kind of resembled a peach pit, with the flesh clinging tightly. Some one said it was pig nut, but looked nothing like the pig nuts I googled. ------------------ I have inluded a few pics of the tree as directed. from far away, and leaves up close. Thought the fruit would be a tell all.

Is that tree still standing? If you can post a photo of the tree (from a distance so we can see the shape) and close up of the leaves that would be helpful for identification and a record for anyone else who has a question about this kind of tree. Thanks! |

I still don't know (this looks like a Howard question!) - but I'm curious - did you cut open the fruit? What did it look and smell like? |

It should have been easier, shouldn't it? As a kid I always used to crack and eat walnuts in the next door neighbor's yard, but that was only the dry nuts on the ground. I never thought to look at the tree to see what the hulls looked like! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juglans_nigra Attachment: Black_Walnut_nut_and_leaf_detail-Wikipedia.jpg [ 261.26 KiB | Viewed 7757 times ] |
