Post subject:  How to remove crape myrtle

Hi,

Has anyone here had experience with removing a crape myrtle down to the roots? There was a large, well-established crape myrtle growing where I wanted a vegetable garden to go. After removing the tree, suckers started coming up everywhere in the garden from the roots, still in the ground! Is there an organic way to stop these roots from producing more trees, or do they need to be dug up?

Thank you!

There is plant energy in the roots that will keep suckers coming up for quite a while. Continuing to cut them back will gradually dissipate the suckers. You could also use a drill to bore holes into the exposed part of the root system then pour sugar over the area and down into the holes. That will help the microorganisms break down the wood fibres faster.
