A friend of mine in southern Stephens Co. Texas has a 5 years in the ground bur oak that is not doing well. I examined it; even took a few pictures, and am interested what the community thought might be wrong. My friend said it has been producing acorns every year, but these pictures were taken April 13, 2019 after a rain. Supplemental water has been added in the past. Also, he adds Super Thrive every year and added Osmocote a month ago. Any help or advice appreciated.

This one is sticking out of the ground like a fencepost - no root flare in view. The first thing he would be told, upon calling into the radio program, is to clear the flare (he may end up with a shallow "dish" around the base of the tree).

That page has several links to how to carefully expose the flare and let the tree breath. Meanwhile, don't drown it.

Good luck!
