Post subject:  How far to prune fruitless mulberyy

House is overf 30 years old with 5 large old fruitless mulberry trees. I have planted some oaks in the vicinity. As the mulberry dies back I will have the oaks already established. Two of the mulberrries have trunks which split in 2-3 main branches. One whole branch is filled with borer holes and is dead. Since it is such a large branch directly off the trunk, do I cut it back to the trunk making the tree looked deformed or do I cut the dead wood back and leave part of the large branch?

Cut it back to the branch collar. Fruitless mulberries (as you seem to have guessed) are not exactly healthy trees to begin with. Take no chances. Get rid of the whole branch and any amount elsewhere that looks ill.

What sort of Oaks did you plant?
