I planted a shumard red oak in the fall of 2000. It did quite well until the middle of this past summer at which time it turned at first pale green and then almost yellow.It is a beautiful tree and i would just die if I found out it was a cross breed with a pin oak.It is planted in black dirt in Kaufman County.Is there any difinitive way to tell if I have a true shumard?By the way the leaves are now a very pretty crimson color. |

Is the canopy tending towards a more rounded shape or a more triangular shape? |

I would have to say it is more of a round shape. |

The canopy will tend to get more of a triangular or more pointed at the top shape. Okay, here's another thought. First I'm presuming you're using the organic program. If not, then even a nice Shumard Red will have trouble in our white rock/Alkalai Clay soils. Anyhow, presuming you're on the natural program, one thing that can make a Shumard do that is wet feet. They don't like too much water, and if you've been watering the lawn a bit on the heavy side, the tree can act like this. It's obviously not too bad or the leaves would have dropped prematurely, and clearly they didn't since they hung on to turn nice and red today. |

Thanks for the info.Yes, I do use the organic program and applied the sick tree treatment late in the summer(except for the spray), so I dont know if it did any good yet.Last winter I put some hay down in my yard to cover some mud so my dogs wouldn't track it in the house , and I read somewhere that hay sometimes has weed killer in it, do you suppose this one bale of hay could cause damage?Oh ,by the way how do you post pictures on this board? |
