I have the chance to buy small Afghan Pines. Will they survive in the black gumbo of Denton County? Anyone had success (or lack of) with them?

Yes, for 10 or so years. They are desert trees and like to die just at the time they start to mature. Unfortunately they are dying all over the state. They do the best in West Texas because of the low rainfall. Try Italian stone pines if you can find any. They are very adapted to the black and white soils.

Post subject:  weird ...........

I live in Lake Dallas, I planted one 5 years ago in front of my house with a soaker hose to water it and the other items in the front of my house............ it grew like crazy for 5 year and then started to die like HG said ... I pruned it way back with the idea I was going to pull it out in last fall ...and the thing started growing back again .... I have also planted 2 small trees at the entrance of the subdivision, the sprinklers don't get to these real hard ............. guess we'll know more in the years to come ...
