Our magnolia is about 40 years old and 30--40 feet tall...It's in the alkaline limestone-based soil here in Central Texas. The tree is looking "long in the tooth", leaves and all.

First guess is water deficiency.

Would it be wise to install a system of soaker hoses along the ground? Seems like that would give consistent water supply that is delivered efficiently without spraying water all over the place.

Actually I've been put off soaker hoses. They tend to wear out and have uneven watering sooner than seem worth the investment to me.

Just make sure it is watered deeply and infrequently with the rest of the yard and that should do you fine.

I'd look more at what it's been eating. If you've been using synthetic weed-n-feed fertilizers for years, that can be making it sick.
