Post subject:  Young white crape myrtle

We planted a 6' white crape myrtle 2 years ago. During the winter and extreme winds the branches encircled each other, turned brown and dried and died. We trimed down to the new growth. As it grew we trimmed the leaves toward the bottom thinking the 'trunks' would get strong. This last winter that new growth froze so we trimmed down to the new growth again. Now, some of the new growth has limbs that grow inward. I am afraid they will encirlce again. How should I trim in order for the tree to grow. I have not trimmed the leaves. I have just cut the limbs that droop to the ground. In order for me to have a strong, healthy tree how do I prune it? We use organic and have done the sick tree treatment; however, the new growth that came from the deeper roots may be too deep in the ground. I know we should expose the flare. Help...

I may not be of much help but the first part of the "sick tree treatment" is to expose the flare! Basically, Crape Myrtles should not be trimmed. You don't say where you are from; is it too cold in the winter for this type crape myrtle?
