My tomato plants are huge. They are flowering some, but I'm not getting tomatoes. Any ideas? |

How often are you fertilizing? You should fertilize a little when you plant them, but don't fertilize again until you see the plant starting to fruit. The fertilize every couple of weeks. If you fertilize too often, you get a big, beautiful plant, but no fruit. |

Mike what variety of tomato plants are you growing? Are they getting 7 - 8 hours of full sun? Perhaps too much water or nitrogen? Tomatoes like a little stress..... |

I'll have to look next week when I get home. They are heirloom. When I planted them I covered the bed in a back of Black Kow and that is all. It flowers pretty well, but I'm not getting much fruit. |

If you are getting flowering, try squirting them with some apple juice or Epsom salt solution. |

when did you plant your tomatoes? Manure is about 80% nitrogen and could give you the green growth I was mentioning. Timing is huge with tomatoes as well. If they were planted after mid-April, some plants stop fruiting when the temps get hot. If it's flowering, but they're not setting fruit, then you may need more pollinators. You can also give the cages a good shake since they can also be wind pollinated. I don't know what in the world apple juice is going to do for your plants. |

I've read that the ethylene in apple juice can help tomato flowers "set" fruit. I use it sometimes in conjunction with epsom salt at various times over the growing season and it does seem to help. I rarely have flowers that don't produce. Even if it doesn't help your tomatoes set fruit, it isn't going to harm them either. |

There are some products for setting fruit without true pollination. Blossom set, something like that - I've seen a couple of brand names. I don't squire the flowers, I squirt a little into the cap and dip a q-tip and touch each flower. (I think it says not to get the spray on the rest of the plant). I use this when it is getting warm and the fruit isn't setting any more, this buys a little more time for fruit but they have no seeds (which looks a little odd in tomatoes). |

if you have flowers but no tomatoes, it normally means you didn't get pollinated. I shake the cages a few times and that always works. |
