Can Horticultural Molasses be used any time of the year? I am New to organic want to get early start before spring |

Horticultural molasses stimulates the biological activity in the soil. I suppose you could use it now, but what are you stimulating? If it is for winter crops or year round plantings, fine, but if it is for the vegetable garden I'd wait until closer to planting time, such as mixing it into the soil amendments when you prepare the beds. |

I spread the molasses last year mostly for control of the ants that had taken over my property. I believe I did that in the fall. I have only two ant hills that I can find. It takes some time before you notice the dwindling ant population, but it works! Also, my grass looked and continues to look pretty good. From that perspective alone -- ant control -- I'm wondering if there is a particular time to spread it that's best. |

Here is my non-scientific thought on when to treat them: I've noticed a couple of ant hills that seem to have emerged during warm periods this winter. I stepped on one the other day and no ants emerged into the cold, so they were pretty deep. If this is the case with your remaining mounds, now would be a good time to treat around those existing mounds so when it warms this week the ants will encounter the molasses. If you start seeing more mounds, usually after a rain or watering, then treat the larger area. |
