Post subject:  Unhappy plants

I have a new lawn. About 1 1/2 months ago I had my landscape expanded tilled and compost mixed into the existing clay soil. The compost looked more like mulch to me, but since I am new to gardening, I didn't question it. My plants and flowers were looking good until about 2 weeks ago. I came home from a week long business trip and all of my flowers were chewed down to the ground. I have lots of grasshoppers and a "little bunny fufu" constantly in my yard. My husband sprayed my yard and plants with pesticide to try to get rid of the grsshoppers. My plants are traumatized and I can't revive them. Is there something wrong in my dirt? Is bunny fufu munching down and laughing at me? Should I pull up the plants and start over? Help!!! My beautiful landscape looks horrible!!!

Sorry about your plants. I went away for a week last year and left my husband in charge of watering them (not an issue this year) and came back to dead as doornail plants. Lucky I got them at Lowes and got over 250$ back and replanted.

As far as your grasshoppers they are really hard to deal with and toxic sprays don't help, hurt the beneficial insects, and pollute our ground water! As far as I know the only way to deal with them is to have plant diversity and beneficial insect population. I am sure all the toxic spray did not help the health of your plants either. One way I have heard to deal with grasshoppers is to take the dead bodies of the grasshoppers and crush them and put them around your plants. You may find this solution at a feed mill or organic gardening store or maybe the Internet. Another way is to get a few chickens...get hens if you don't want the noise.

What ever you do, stay away from toxic sprays! They harm your pets, the health of your children and yourself! You breath them, your pets walk through them and drag it in your home and on it goes.

If my plants fail I try a couple of organic solutions, if nothing helps I pull them up and put them in the compost pile. More than once I have gone to the compost pile and have seen them THRIVING, don't ask me why. Good luck!
