| Post subject: | Care of Hydrangea |
We have four hydrangeas growing next to the north side of the house next to the water faucet. As a result they get plenty of water and some sun early morning and late evening. I was told to prune them back in November in order to have blooms. It is the end of November. The plants still have blooms. Do I prune them? How much? Also, what causes the color in the blooms? The color on mine ranges from light pink, dark bright pink to red and sometimes they are green. Thanks for your input. |

DO NOT PRUNE THEM until after they finish blooming in the spring! Pruning now will assure no blooms for you. Your location is good. The blooms start out looking green then change to there color. Our clay soil here will generally keep them shades of pink. Acid soils make them blue. Good luck trop |

Thanks, trop, for your info. If I am understanding correctly you are saying to wait to prune when they stop blooming in the spring. Do you mean before they bloom initially because they bloom all spring, summer and fall. They do become dormant in the winter and then put back out in the spring. They usually stop blooming in Nov. That's when I usually prune them and take out the dead stems, but they are blooming longer this year. So, I wondered what to do. |

removing dead stems is ok at anytime I cut mine back some time in May, and don't touch them after that. Too heavy of pruning right now can lose blooms for the spring. My landscape crew accidentally cut mine to the ground last year and I only had a handful of blooms. |
