Post subject:  Rawhide safe?

Do you have any information of advice on giving dogs rawhide?

I've been hearing mixed opinions on this subject. I'm curious if anyone here has some links, facts or personal opinions on this?

I'm hearing that it may be hard for a dog to break it down, and thus blockage may occur. Kinda scary for me to hear this. Max loves rawhide, but I may have to quit giving them to him.
Thank you.

I used to work for a company in Colorado that made natural pet treats. I was told while working there that rawhide was not good for dogs. The chews we made were made out of beef tendon. We would dry the tendon in ovens after spraying with a molasses/liquid smoke/vitamine e oil mixture. Dogs loved them. They are outside treats as they get a bit gooey as the dogs chew on them. Another, probably better, product we made was dried pig ears. Dogs really enjoy them, they are digestable, and they have a decent protien content. The price of pig ears has really gone up as there is a large demand for them in China as a human food source. If you buy the pig ears, check the lable for ingredients to insure you are not getting a product with any preservatives you may not want for your pet. Also, check the appearance of the ears. They should have no hair and not be all shriveled up.
