I recently planted a small Shantung Maple. About 5ft tall, 1-1 1/2 diameter. I located the root flare and tried to detangle the roots.

Ok now for my problem, the root ball is only about 8 in deep and 6 in wide. I am in a new house addition and there is no wind block and I am on a slight hill. It is very, very winding. Should I try to stake the tree for a short while, or just hope it doesn't blow over.

Thanks

John

I have had a similar experience. There wasn't enough root ball for the roots to really grab onto. Therefore, the tree kept falling over. I think in your situation, as I did, you should stake it for a while at least until the roots begin to take hold. Just do it in a way so you don't damage the bark.
