I hope you don't mind this, but I saw this on another gardening forum and thought it would be fun to get it started here.

You know when you're a wacko composter when . . .

. . . you stand by the fence of a pasture with cattle grazing wondering how you can get those cow patties for your compost pile.

. . . you dig things like old vegetables, coffee grounds, etc. out of the trash that your spouse had thrown away.

. . . you see a neighbor raking leaves in the fall and you run over to ask them if you can have them.

Okay, now its your turn to add to this list. Have fun!

When you urinate on your compost piles and your compost tea recipes to get extra nitrogen in the mix?

You know when you're a wacko composter when . . .

. . . you just about  because your vehicle has NO MORE ROOM for any more bags of leaves or you won't be able to drive safely and you have to drive by them.

or

. . . your vehicle still has tell-tale odors  and debris from last falls leaf harvest, or this springs manure haul.

or

. . . you grub through the trash cans at family (or other) gatherings for the melon rinds or other compostable items you just need to get your pile balanced at home again!

I just love these! I feel among kindered spirits!

How about getting free large salmon, trout, and grouper fish scraps in 5 gallon buckets from the local fish/seafood market, mixing with mature compost and sawdust and dry molasses powder, letting it rot for a few weeks in closed 5 gallon buckets, then using it as a homemade whole fish meal paste for the hot compost pile or for special aerated compost tea recipes.

Then I get cussed out every week, by my family and neighbors, because for about a few hours there is that classic stinky fishy smell. They don't understand why I want to stink up the yard with my organic tea c***.... (LOL)

Is that insane or what?

I've been composting for almost a year now and I too have found myself going to great lengths to hide the fact, from both my neighbors and wife, that every now and then I'll sneak over to the pile (which is 4 feet from my neighbors back yard "privacy" fence) and add some "natural nitrates" to the mix. Usually it's turning on the water hose and "watering", inspecting some imaginary, yet fascinating, aspect of the house's siding or the nearby crab apple tree. Always at night and always with great trepidation that I'll end up having to explain just what the hell I'm doing there with my zipper down. From the wife I'd just get "that look" but my neighbors would probably call the police and ask questions later!

My neighbors found out I was a compost wacko when I bartered home-grown tomatoes to the people who mowed their lawns for sacks of grass clippings...my newest neighbor found out I was a compost wacko when I gave her a compost turning tool as a housewarming present...She and I are now the Wacky Compost Wacko Ladies who scout Starbuck's and Kaffa Coffee Houses for the Thursday coffee grounds...to put in our compost piles...
if nothing else, being a compost wacko will make new friends!

-you take home your banana peels from your lunch at work
-you offer to help clean a chicken coop in hopes you can sneak some bedding
-you turn vegetarian because you can't stand that some of your leftovers can't :( go in the compost
-weeding is now for the purpose of feeding your pile
-cleaning out your dead vegetables after a freeze is suddenly a thrill
-you consider buying a rabbit, or chickens, or hamsters for the "browns"
-you retreive onions skins and pepper tops from the trash can of the restaurant that you work

After having spent an entire day working, & your feet are
letting you know it's time to plop down the bod, you still feel the
need, or is it magnetic pull to take out all the veggie and fruit
stuff from the meals that day and start chopping them up into
small, very small pieces to go outside and be burried? I resisted
kitchen compost til I saw the earth life likes it small. It seems
effective since it's disappearing really quickly. This is below the
surface of course. I haven't even attempted to get into the oak
leaves, etc. I am trying to remain calm with all the new info.
I am a newbie with all this and have been in resistance
for a while to doing the kitchen compost thing. Chopping
it up really small makes me feel like I am a little furry
critter going out back to bury my "treasures" .

You are a Compost Wacko when the house next door won't sell because prospective buyers believe the house is too close to the City Recycle Dump.

Do most Starbucks stores collect the coffee grounds in bags for easy handling and do they willingly part with them??

Achy-breaky - they are more than pleased to part with one day's coffee grounds - just tell them and be sure and be consistent! When my neighbor and I went to the local Starbuck's we were sure to mention that the competing Kaffa coffeehouse gave us theirs - (not necessarily true, but...that's marketing for you!) and now they just set aside Thursday's grounds in the bag for us!

Now not only do I fuss at my sweetie for not washing of his plate. He now gets lectured on what goes to the compost pail and what goes to garbage, then he has to wash his plate. Poor fella!

I'll admit I've been known to buy extra fresh produce that I don't need when it's on a good sell. For the purpose of feeding my compost pile.

BTW I heard to NOT put anything acidic in my compost pile, as it would hurt my worms. Is that true?

Glad you all mentioned Starbucks. I read about that recently and have yet to try getting grounds. I'll have to stop by my local one.

That's not totally true. Fresh sawdust and citrus fruits and pine needles are all acidic and are perfect for hot composting. Mature compost always buffers the pH toward neutral 7, after decomposing all of its ingredients. Whether they are acidic or alkaline.

Thanks William.
I still compost my citrus things, I just have been putting them in their own little pile away from my big worm composting one. Frankly though it's turning into a big one too. I guess I'll just keep them both going and see if worms turn up in the citrus one.
