Does anyone know when to plant elbon rye for a cover crop in the garden? I live in Central Texas.

According to Howard's vegetable book, plant your cover crop about 3 weeks before your first fall frost.

Generally, sometime after the 15th of September is a safe date. Elbon Rye is very cold tolerant, and therefore rather forgiving to later planting dates.

I would personally plant no later than Oct. 1st though for greatest benefit. The earlier you plant, generally the more biomass you will produce.

Also, if you will not be irrigating your cover crop, then the earlier you plant, the better chance you have of catching a rain shower, and achieving establishment prior to frost.
