We have a property in Eustace, TX where we see snakes, occasionally - some obviously poisonous and others not. However, we haven't been concerned until now.
Last fall, we sadly had to cut-down a dead pine tree. We piled everything in a large burning ring in the back field, also tossing in pine cones and other tree prunings/trimmings, and waiting for a non-windy day to burn the whole thing. Well, here it is about 9 months later and the pile has grown while still waiting for a good day to burn it.
Our neighbor, a retired landscaper, suggested we get it burned asap because all kinds of snakes will nest in these piles. Our concern now is when we finally do light it that poisonous snakes will scatter everywhere to escape. Recently my hubby tossed some brush on the pile and was pretty sure he heard movement from inside.
Can you recommend a good way for us to burn the pile and deal with the snakes that may escape?
Does your county allow this burning? Do you want to kill all of those snakes? I'll beat around the near side of the stack, I think, and hope they exit on the side away from the house and yard before burning it. Just a thought.
There are no burning restrictions unless there's a burn ban in effect. Honestly, we have no desire to burn them and the idea does bother us. They're doing what snakes naturally do, and we unknowingly gave them that resource.
Our sons brainstormed and suggested we dig a trench all the way around and light it so they can't get out. Since we don't want to kill them, here's a new thought .. Maybe we can dig a fire trench about half or 2/3rds around on the side facing the house, allowing the snakes an escape route into the back field and beyond.
The beating method before lighting makes sense, too. Guess we'll need leather boots for that just to be safe.
The neighbor's house behind ours is about 2 acres from the burn pile. They're jerks, though, so maybe they'll get what's coming to them. I'm so bad! Hehe!
