Beneficial Bacteria and Mycorrhizal Fungus Newsletter

I am not seeing beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizal products in some retail stores. That’s too bad because inoculating plants with living organisms is a key to early production of both landscaping and food crops. As the Dirt Doctor, it is my job to help you improve your understanding of organic soil enhancement and to show you how to use tools like fish hydrolysate and beneficial microbe products.

What are Mycorrhizae?

“Mycor” and “rhiza” literally means “fungus” and “root” and defines the mutually beneficial relationship between the plant and root fungus. These specialized fungi colonize plant roots and extend far into the soil. Mycorrhizal fungal filaments in the soil are extensions of root systems and are more effective in nutrient and water absorption than the roots themselves. More than 90 percent of plant species in natural areas form a symbiotic relationship with the beneficial mycorrhizal fungi. (Dr. Michael Amarathus)

Mycorrhizal fungi will form on the roots of plants naturally if organic techniques and products are used, but it takes some time. To greatly speed up the process, microbe products can be purchased and used. Some products have a wide range of species and work in all soils from acid sandy soils to alkaline clay soils. Some products on the market only have few species and don't work in all soils.
