Endangered Birds

9/22/06 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Three (maybe 4) of the most endangered birds are from Texas

A list of the ten most endangered birds in the country includes at least 3 birds who call Texas home.  These birds are on the brink of extinction (being gone forever from the earth).  They are:

Whooping Crane

Piping Plover

Golden-cheeked Warbler

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker was also in the Top 10.  It was recently "re-discovered" in an Arkansas swamp.  The same habitat exists in eastern Texas- a "Cypress swamp" extending hope that it lives here too.

The list of the Top 10 Most Endangered Birds was compiled by the National Audubon Society, which also listed the Common Sage Grouse, California Condor, Kirtland's Warbler, Ashy Stormpetrol, Kittlitz's Murrelet and the Florida Scrub-Jay.
