Grass, Shade Tolerant

The following is a shade-friendly mix that is good for the Southern United States:

  • Wild rye
  • Virginia rye
  • Purple top
  • Inland sea oats
  • Eastern gamma

Or, plant cereal rye in the Fall - then scalp and lightly till before planting the native Summer mix in the Spring.

Cereal rye - Plant in the Fall 80 - 100 lbs. per acre mixed with Thunderturf at 40 lbs. per acre. Cereal rye can be contaminated with bastard cabbage (wild mustard). Scalp in February to allow negative Summer grasses to have more room.
