Mexican Firespike

:  Odontonema strictum

 
COMMON NAMES:  Mexican Firespike, Firespike

HABIT:  Showy evergreen shrubby perennial that will add a tropical look to the garden. It is winter hardy in the south and has a high heat tolerance. It is a fast grower with tall thick branches that grow upright and dark green shiny leaves. It flowers in September with large upright panicles of tubular flowers that the hummingbirds love. It can reach 5’ in height with a 24-40” spread.
 
CULTURE:  Hardiness zone:  8 - 11. Exposure: part shade to sun. Water requirements are medium. 
 
USES:  Flowering perennial good for attracting butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators.
