Pilot Program Turns Young Students into Organic Gardeners

At the Lawrenceville Elementary School in Lawrence, New Jersey, a creative new pilot program is helping students learn about gardening through an on-site organic garden. Intended to help children understand where their food comes from, the garden has become hugely popular among students. Students learn about all phases of organic gardening, including bugs, economics of food, and how it gets to market, says this article in The Times. "The produce grown in the garden—-such as lettuce, carrots, and radishes—-are harvested, washed, and served during lunch periods. The “outdoor classroom” has grown from a single bed to five, thanks to grants from various sources.
