Sumac - Evergreen


 

SUMAC, EVERGREEN

Rhus virens (RUSE VIE-rens)

Evergreen   Sun   Height 7′   Spread 7′   Spacing 3′–4′

HABIT: Bushy growth. Rounded leaves do not look like other sumacs. Red berries in summer. Reddish-purple fall color. Aromatic white flowers June through November.

CULTURE: Drought tolerant and carefree, native to rocky hillsides. Over watering is sure to kill.

USES: Specimen, mass planting, natural areas. Attracts birds and butterflies, provides nesting site or materials for native bees. 

PROBLEMS: Few if any.

NOTES: Also called Tobacco Sumac, Labrisco; Native to Central Texas. Deer love this plant.
