Tree Damage

Q.  This was a tree in Southeast Oklahoma - Why? No fences attached and deep forest property.  - A. B. Oklahoma

A.  Thanks for the great shots of three interesting things. The gray is lichen, the green is moss and the damaged areas were caused by by a woodpecker called sapsucker. The lichen and moss are benign and interesting looking. Sapsucker damage is serious but this looks like old damage and the bird has moved on to other trees.
