Cotton Root Rot

A fungal disease common in alkaline soils that attacks poorly adapted plants. The best preventative is healthy soil with a balance of nutrients and soil biology. Adding sulfur to the soil at 5 pounds per 1,000 square feet (about 200 lbs per acre) will help. Do annual soil tests and stop when enough sulfur is in the soil. Products that contain sodium will sometimes help. Using sea salt should be considered. Cornmeal and various living organism products such as Actinovate will also help. The Sick Tree Treatment is the best solution for trees. In no till agriculture the organic content increases and helps prevent cotton root rot. The disease is encouraged by synthetic fertilizers. Chemicals reduce the humus and thus hurt soil health.
